It's still possible to get a car on a very, very hot day, warm it up to very very hot, shut it down, and the vapor pressure will force enough out that it overwhelms the cannisters and you smell it. They are designed to capture the vapor and not let it out- for normal applications. Which is another way of saying that the fuel systems are not actually sealed. Apparently fuel was getting too warm by being circulated through the hot engine compartment. When the engine runs the canister is purged through the engine intake and the trapped vapors are burnt.įuel injection systems mostly do not have a return to the tank for the fuel. Gasoline that evaporates in the tank is trapped in a carbon canister.
